DIY Instant Oatmeal Packets

Happy Friday everyone!  Today I have a fun money saving tip that’s not new by any means, but still great!

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to breakfast I usually look for something I can throw together quickly.  Bagels and cream cheese, english muffins, granola bars…

One of my favorite go-to quick breakfasts is instant oatmeal.  A box with 10 packets runs about $2.50 at my local Walmart, so not incredibly pricey, but still I thought there must be a cheaper way.  And there is!  I was able to make nearly 3 times the amount for  about $2.  Here’s how:

1.  First thing was to get all my ingredients and supplies together.  Here’s what I used:

3 lb bag of Quick Oats.  Make sure they are quick, it makes a difference ($3.50/Walmart)
Bag of light brown sugar (69 cents/Winco)
Box of Ziplock bags. Snack size would work also. ($1/Dollar Tree)
Measuring cup (1/2 cup)
Measuring Spoon (1 or 2 Tbsp)

2.  Store bought pouches contain about 1/4 cup of oats.  I typically end up using 2 pouches because I’m to hungry for just one, so I included 1/2 cup of oats in each of my bags.

3.  Next I scooped 2 tbs. of the brown sugar into each bag.

4.  Then viola!  Your done with the hard work!

Now, my favorite flavor of oatmeal is Maple and Brown Sugar, but since you can’t really put maple syrup in the bag I just add a little bit of it in when I cook it ($1.90/Winco).  Some other ideas would be chocolate chips, fruit, almonds….  Really the ideas are endless!

When all was said and done I made 14 baggies (equivalent to 28 store bought pouches).  I used about half the oats and 3/4 of the bag of brown sugar, equaling out to less than $2 for the lot and it only took me about 10 minutes to put together.  Definitely worth it!
